KhmerConnection Preview Launches!By Poli Bou Saturday, April 1st, 2000
Long Beach, CA -- Sleep? Who needs sleep? The staff here at KhmerConnection pulled an all-nighter so that we can deliver on our promised launch date of April 1, 2000. Arent you glad we didnt pull an April Fools joke on you. So here it is: KhmerConnection is now online in a fully functional preview mode. After several months of planning and development since the conception of our initial idea almost one year ago we are proud to present to the Cambodian Internet population an interactive meeting place for promoting community.
Some Background Info When we first sought out to make this site there only existed a small number of Cambodian sites that had relevant information. And now a year later this is still somewhat the case. But here at Khmer Connection, we are hoping to change all that. Our goal with this website is to unite the online Cambodian community as a portal for anything Khmer related to bridge the information gap. So if your looking for the recipe to that weird thing your mom makes, or the latest party craze, or if you just want to know whats going on in your area, we hope this is the first place you turn to. And even if you cant find it here, we will help you find it somewhere else.
Doing something right always takes more effort than one usually realizes initially. With Khmer Connection this was no exception. Making a website that operates like KhmerConnection requires an in-depth knowledge of various computer system. Much of the programming issues had to be dealt with required that we lean new things as we went along. We hope you, the users will appreciate the amount of hard work that may not be apparent in creating any kind of website.
From Start to Present Since we are in preview mode and not officially finish, we cant really say from start to finish. But here are the basic facts on what it took to get this site up. First of all it required planning. There wasnt anything specifically special about our planning stages. We debated and eventually came with the things we wanted to do. Now granted that planning is a good thing, it was pretty much pointless since we never actually followed the plan exactly the way it was laid out? So here is where it gets interesting. During the first phase of development things were done over and over again. The plan was there, but new ideas were always emerging. So we were starting to get pretty good at doing the same thing. And before we knew it time was starting to tick away rather quickly and time constraint form other things started to make the situation critical. So after the neglect of the project due to finals, we started off fresh for spring break and worked like mad and what you see now is the end result.
Lets Hear What Youve Got Everything here is totally free. So come on in and take a look around and sign up whenever you get the chance. You will soon be getting your very own email and even space to create your very own homepage. Dont worry if that sounds a little too complicated, we will have tools set up that will make it a breeze. Our message board system has been design to be easy to use. So dont hesitate to come on by and share your thoughts and see what other Khmer people around the world are talking about. Shortly, with the introduction of our instant messenger, you will be able to message them instantly and have a conversation in real time without the need of any new and extra software. And dont forget to make a profile so the people who youre talking to can see who you are. With the profiles you can even customize Khmer Connection to fit your personality. Want some color in your life? Select one of the various color schemes to spice things up.
Note From the Team Now that last hour before launch is upon us, we would like to thank everyone who helped us in making this site a reality and in understanding that some sacrifices had to be made. And to all our visitors, thank you for visiting and have a safe and happy new years!
Excuse my incoherence, I need sleep =)
