Page 1: KC Sits Down with the Khmer Angels

By Kim Preap
Wednesday, June 20th, 2001

If there was ever a case where the old clich "looks can be deceiving" held truth, these three ladies would be it. Vibol and I were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sit down with the Khmer Angels and their manager to get an inside look on whom the Khmer Angels really are. At first, we were overwhelmed by their beauty, but underneath this facade lies intelligence, compassion, honesty, sincerity, and determination. We chatted openly over lunch and these ladies are no more different from your typical Khmer woman next door. They hold true to their roots, and their main focus besides their music is to send a message to Cambodians, most noted, the female side of the community that you don't have to live behind fear; you can make a difference in your life if you so choose to.

KC: Let's start of with a little introduction of yourself.

Alanna: Well, my name is Alanna Kang, I'm 21 years old. I was born in Cambodia and raised up in north California. I moved down here to Corona Hills. I've been in the entertainment industry since I was 10 when I did modeling. I did fashions show and I was in the Miss Asian California Pageant. I also did karaoke videos for the Cambodian market and now I'm crossing over to singing. And that's all about me.

Lisa: Well my name is Lisa Chimm, I'm in my twenties. I was born in Cambodia also and I was raised in Long Beach for about 15 years and then I moved to Riverside and that's where I'm living at right now with my family. I've been in the entertainment field now for about 5 years. I started out doing karaoke videos. And how I got started in singing was when you go singing like in karaoke bars, she (Alanna) always thought that I had a great voice but I didn't have confidence in myself, but she met this producer and we went and we sang in the studio and we thought well why don't we do a CD for the Cambodian market. So we did that and it came out and we had good results from it. And about 2 to 3 months a go, we formed our group. We're all best friends and cousins and we formed the group Khmer Angels and we're going to be coming out with our first Khmer Angel release. All the other CD's out right now are individual work, just to clarify that so people don't get confused.

Somalis: Hi, my name is Somalis Chan. I got into karaoke because Alanna was in it and she took me into it and I got into singing because Lisa was into it so I went into the studio and starting singing with her. I'm also in my early twenties and I'm the youngest out of six kids.

KC: How did you ladies come up with the name Khmer Angels?

Alanna: Well we give the credit to Lisa Chimm here.

Lisa: Well you know Charlie's Angels, well I thought it was really cool and you know us being Khmer and we don't have anything out like that so I thought it would add a little spice to us.

Alanna: At first I thought it was really corny. I'm like oh my god! How corny!

Lisa: But when we went to San Pueblo, everyone was like wow Khmer Angels! Sometimes people mistake it for the Khmer Ankles or the Khmer Angkors. But that's just with the older fans.
