A Lesson to Learn

Guys and girls, I’d like to tell you that when you work for corporate America, it is essential to socialize. This can come in very handy when you’re looking for a job.

I’ll give you an example for my husband and me. My husband works as a CAD Drafter/Designer for a well known company. When the recession hit, he got laid off just recently. Before him, many of the project managers, landscape architects, and engineers were also laid off. Well, when my husband was looking for a job, he called these people and what do you know? He got a job right away.

For me, I’ve been offered many jobs in the insurance industry through many of the vendors, agents, and brokers I deal with everyday. I like where I am so I will not quit my job. But if I did, I have no problem getting it.

See, it’s imperative that wherever you work, always be kind, nice, and socialize. You can always have work when you need one.

It’s professional networking not socializing per se that creates economic value. Socializing by itself is just for entertainment value if it doesn’t lead to networking. The difference between the two is that you build a strong enough professional rapport that the other person is willing to stand by you by providing reference as well as job leads. Socializing takes no work whatsoever, but networking requires hard work on your part to create that special bond beyond idle chit chat behind the coffee station or the water cooler.

Professional networking requires you to reach out to them, to add real value to them in some way, and make it clear that you’re going to be their reference and their leads as well. And in these days, it generally means that you’re linked together in professional network site liked LinkedIn.

I’m glad things worked out for your husband. I’m having a hard time finding work right now and may resort going back to work at a call centre. Not my ideal job, but I’ll have to settle, since I have the experience and it’s easy to get in (due to high turn over).

Can’t say for personal insurance but for commercial insurance, an insurance adjuster can make from $55K to $110K depending on their licenses, etc.
