In light of the latest craze in identifying business ethics and social responsibility of corporations, I thought I’d share something I found while doing a strategic management project on Denver based Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Did you know that Chipotle uses free-range pigs in their carnitas? Free-range pigs are raised outside (in open pastures) without anti-biotics or growth hormones and they aren’t fed animal bi products (strict vegitarian diet). Their supplier is Niman Ranch from Iowa. They comply with sustainable agriculture methods that take into consideration the idea of “food with integrity.” The result of all of this is great tasting pork. In fact, after switching to free-range pork, Chipotle raised the price of their carnitas $1/burrito and sales have doubled since.

This is prime example of a company taking social responsibility very seriously and taking care of their customers. They’re giving them good quality food without sacrificing their profit margins and taking care of the environment. In fact, it is their trademark. People know that when they go to Chipotle, they will have the best quality and great tasting food. No, this is not a sales pich. :)

That’s what maple leaf did with their Prime naturally brand. They feed their chickens a strict vegetarian grain diet.

Did you mean the barbacoa? That’s my new favorite. I’ve gotten sick of eating the carnitas all the time.
