Every time I visited Cambodia, people living in Cambodian tend to assume and think that Cambodian growing up in the United States lack sensitivity and has little and no understanding of Khmer’s custom, culture, heritage, and history.

What is right and wrong in Cambodia are very confusing. For example:

    1. Cambodian men have two wives and a girlfriend and still go to the bar paying for sex
    2. Cambodian men like to spend money on alcohol and fine dining with friends and has little money to care for their own children at home
    3. Cambodian men think it is ethnical and a custom to cheat on their wife.
    4. Cambodian men like to think it is their business to screw around and when asked by his wife, she ended up with bruises and swollen eyes for question his absolute authority
    5. Cambodian men like to honor their ancestor and worship lord Buddha but pay very little to improve the quality of the temple in their ancestry village
    6. All Cambodian men like to keep their wives home cooking and cleaning
    7. Young Cambodian men like to have girlfriend for simply for sex. No commitment and no marriage unless she is from a rich family
    8. Cambodian young men with sword, knives and guns feel free to kill anyone and get away with it as long as his parent is high ranking government official
    9. Cambodian family sell their daughter for money to HIV infected men and whore house
    10. Cambodian women like to sell their body for money to foreigner if the price is right
    11. Cambodian young girl sell their body for cell phone and nice cloth
    12. Cambodian men and women share equally in corrupt state of mind
    13. Khmer family in Cambodia rather see their relative die than give them money to help with medical treatment
    14. Khmer family wants blood and revenge than resolve with peaceful mean with a stroke of a pen. They believe that winning is everything include killing

I understand that I am not well verse in Khmer reading and writing as well as spoken words but I truly believe that my ethnical and morality is much in depth in relationship to honoring my Khmer heritage, custom, tradition, and history. From the categories above 1-14, I believe all are corrupt, sinful and evil.

Why do Khmer people in Cambodia think that they are much smart Khmer than us in the United States of America?

I think you’re right and they’re right. Of course us Khmers in America lack sensitivity. We look at Cambodia with disgust….nothing really wrong with that. If you lived in a well off country and go to a 3rd world country, u can’t help but react in a digusting manner. Yes, we lack cultural understanding…that’s the result of living in a different country. We’re a product of our environment, and part of it is our fault.

People in general always like to act like they know more. Khmer Americans go to Cambodia and act lik they are kings and worldy. Things that you don’t know, they’ll take act like they’re smarter than you cuz they do know.

    Human nature.

I think that the sets of labels and stereotypes pointed out are just that: “Stereotypes”. I’m sure that Khmer-American identity is as unique and different as Khmer identity. All of the points posted are so inclusive of the many facets of the intersectionality of gender, sexuality, power, dominance etc. It is not fair to say that one is more demonized than the other though. We are in a sense, evolving human beings. One part that needs to be uttered is the simple fact that many people have not been educated to understand those power dynamics in play. Men and women this….men and women that….> these are all correlative of gender norms…and as we all know, gender norms are dictated through societal structures. It is not fair to even marginalize sexuality in one form or another as I have read. There is nothing wrong with being homosexual…..just as nothing is wrong with being heterosexual. Homosexuality is in fact a very lived out lifestyle through out history, just that repressive mechanisms of control suppress this part of identity into an even deeper repression. Khmer culture is rich and our traditions are unique. Khmer-Americans in a sense lack the connection to the culture because we are bombarded by mainstream media and hegemonic discourse. The “in” is what dilutes our cultural understanding and sensitivity. Being Khmer and Khmer-American are distinctively different. Coming from a position of privilege and relative power, US Khmer-Americans are somewhat desensitized to what they have> Privilege. It’s not easy to travel to a developing nation and expect to fit in 100% without holding some biased assumptions. Our responsibility is to check our ourselves….understand our privilege and power and not to impose it on those who are not as privileged. Its called personal responsibility.

Khmer is Khmer, what we think of each other is very subjective. When I was in Srok Khmer most people could tell that I am Khmer, but not local. That is fine by me…the most important thing is that they still recognized me as Khmer. In regard to whom is better that is childish. Your should rejected the idea from the start, instead tell them that you loved all Khmer.

I am not in any way imposing that being Khmer-American is better than being Khmer. I’m talking about privilege and the reality that it holds. Khmer-American is still a part of Khmer culture. In regards to the differences…..there are differences whether you believe it or not. Cultural and socio-economic differences. Although these differences should not divert our attention to the main purpose: our cultural and ancestral sameness.
