My Dad is having surgery in a few weeks. I asked work if I could take off that day and if I could use my sick time since employees here can take off time to care for their children. They told me I could use my vacation or leave without pay.

Do you think it’s fair that they said “no”?

I think that’s unfair. Your father is a direct relative just like children. Is there anyone you could go to to explain your sitauation and now unfair and unreasonable it is to allow it for your kids but not for your parents?

Something like this occured for our Company as well. We get time off for a death to a mother or father, but you had to take off vacation time if it was a mother-in-law or father-in-law. So some people filed a complaint and they revised the policy.

…next time, just call sick…why give them the notice?…
…they don’t care much about you or your family…all they care is how much work they can get out of you…

call up HR and ask them if they have ‘family sick leave’. this is often used in cases such as the one you have to take time off to care for immediate family members vs. sick time which is used without advance approval notice.

ooh are you suppose to get pay for that one day? if it is sick leave?
cuz all this time I thought sick leave dont get pay. cuz I know ppl take 2-4 weeks of sick leave to take care of their parent. and I thought they just take off without pay.
nevertheless I think its fair enough, when they say go without pay or use the vacation

i accumulate 6 hrs of sick time a month. we are able to use it until it depletes. FMLA will not work in this case because i only need one day off. i just wanted to voice my opinion that the workplace can be a very discriminating place. i know for a fact that people are always using their kids as excuses to get out of work. even worse is when you see these people that work from home calling in sick!!! boo hoo!
