Me and two other friends decided to jump on a plane and headed to the east coast to visit some family. While we were there we decided to head to New York and Maine. it was a great experience and it was our first trip together without any adults tagling along and telling what to do and what not to do. We found our way around by ourselves. That won’t be the end of it.

The pic is a pic of one of the ferries we took to the statue of liberty. that was the first time I’ve came that close to the statue. it was a great experience. The ferrie ride itself was wonderful.

Besides from having fun, the trip also brought me and friends even closer together. We had a blast and that was a summer I would never forget.

^ I’ve been to NY twice and I’ve never visited the Statue of Liberty. I see it from the car but that’s about it. I love NY…I love the beat the city lives to…I love the food…I love that even when I’m in the middle of nothing, I’m in the middle of everything…there’s always so much going on in the city.

    What was Maine like?

I had goosebumps and still have hard time to swallow after reading your encounter w/ the young girl. I feel really bad to be here in the US and spending a nice life here but you know what my friend? I know that I’ll change some of those little girls and boys’s lives in few years when I’ll be ready to go to Cambodia, my beloved Land. There’s no moment I don’t think of those who were not lucky to be in a western country. Those who said that they wish they lived in Cambodia forget [easily] the condition of the poors. Forget about the fruits and sceneries, the people matters more.

    My dear friend,

I never thought that this story could move someone so much.

Thank you so very much for caring.

If enough people start to care and come to visit our homeland more often,
the little boys and girls like the ones I described could hope for
a better future, not because they can count on enough money for a few
more meals but maybe because they will be able to attend school, learn to
read and write and bring the illiteracy rate down slowly but surely.
Then maybe one day, they will be able to finish primary school, then high
    school, etc.

Another KCer wrote in the Politics (in fact, to counter my cynicism
with regard to the talks between the CPP and FUNCINPEC on the formation
of the new government) “Tok Tok Penh Bampong”.

    This proverb may apply here.

Your summary about people being more important than fruit or scenery reminds me of a dialog in this movie “The Joy Luck Club” of several years
ago. If you have not seen it or read the book by Amy Tan, I recommend it.

One of the daughters apologised to her mother for being such a disappointment(the mother was the first one to die in the movie, i.e. the one who left her two daughters behind in China):

“You’ve got class. No one needs to teach you. You’ve got a good heart!”

    You are a good person.
