Élodie Yung is a French actor of Cambodian descent. She grew up in France.[1] She is known for playing Elektra in the Marvel series Daredevil and The Defenders, and for the lead role in the Fox drama The Cleaning Lady. In 2022 she was living in the United States.[2]
Early life
Yung trained in karate for ten years from the age of nine and earned a black belt.[3][1] She told Audrey magazine in 2013 that she grew up in the suburbs of Paris with few Cambodians around her, and that she wished she spoke better Khmer.[1]
Career
Yung did not set out to act. While she was studying law, a casting director put her in the French teen drama La Vie devant nous, which ran from 2002 to 2003, and she went on to French television and film work, including the action film District 13: Ultimatum.[1] Her first Hollywood break was the role of Miriam Wu in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, followed by the ninja Jinx in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013).[1] She moved to the United States about ten years before 2022, after becoming frustrated with the French film industry. She told NBC News that she had been typecast in French film as an "angry cop", and that she chooses her American roles with care. Her American roles include a goddess in Gods of Egypt and an Interpol agent in The Hitman's Bodyguard.[2]
She played Elektra in the second season of Daredevil. Gulf News, reprinting The Washington Post, writes that she won the part after a six-stage audition, and that her years of karate helped with the fights, though she had to learn the character's sai blades from scratch.[3]
In The Cleaning Lady, which began on Fox in 2022, Yung plays Thony De La Rosa, a doctor who comes to the United States and works as a cleaner for the mob in Las Vegas. NBC News writes that the character was first written as Filipina and became Cambodian after Yung was cast.[2]
Cambodia
Yung told Audrey in 2013 that she had visited Cambodia, including an orphanage and some non-governmental organizations, and that she hoped to give something back to the country.[1]
