Alice Gu is a director and cinematographer who made The Donut King, about Cambodian refugee doughnut entrepreneurs in California.
Alice Gu is a film director, writer and cinematographer who began her career as a director of photography, shooting documentaries including Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton, which premiered at Sundance in 2017 (Script Magazine; Alice Gu). Her feature directing debut, The Donut King, follows Cambodian refugee Ted Ngoy and the doughnut business he built in the United States; it won a Special Jury Award at South by Southwest and best-documentary awards at several festivals in 2020 (Script Magazine; Wikipedia). She has since directed the short Shimmer, Inspired by Eva Young and the documentary Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2025 (Wikipedia).
