Bérénice Marlohe is a French actor of Cambodian and Chinese descent,[1][2] known for playing Sévérine in the James Bond film Skyfall (2012). The French film site AlloCiné gives her birth as May 1979, in Paris.[1]

Career

Marlohe was a painter and pianist before she turned to acting.[3] AlloCiné writes that she began as a model and started acting in 2007, in advertisements and small parts in French television series such as Femmes de loi, Section de recherches and R.I.S. Police scientifique.[1] In France she was told again and again that she lacked the connections or the look to become a film actor.[2][3] Interview links that look to her mixed heritage, and the Los Angeles Times wrote that her Eurasian background was part of the reluctance she met.[2][3] She told the Los Angeles Times that the producers and director of one film had also called her too tall beside the actors and too strong a presence beside the lead actress.[3]

About a year before Skyfall went into production, she took a reel of her French television roles to Los Angeles. She heard about the film's auditions while waiting in Paris for her American visa, tracked down the casting director and the director Sam Mendes's agent online, and won the part after two auditions.[3] Sévérine is a woman tied to the film's villain, played by Javier Bardem. Marlohe said she based the character on the chimera of myth rather than on earlier Bond women, and Daniel Craig told the Los Angeles Times that she gave a small part a great deal of depth.[2][3]

When Skyfall came out she was finishing work on a film by Terrence Malick.[3] AlloCiné lists her later films as including Song to Song, Revolt and Redivider, all released in 2017.[1]
