Cambodian Coordinating Council

The Cambodian Coordinating Council (CamCC) is a Long Beach, California, nonprofit that ran the city's Cambodian New Year festival from 2007 to 2019.[1]

History

After early attempts to win city approval for a Cambodia Town district failed, the council was among the groups that joined the Cambodia Town Initiative Task Force in looking for other ways to build support.[1]

The Cambodian New Year Parade along Anaheim Street was run by the Cambodian New Year Parade Association in 2005 and 2006 and then passed to CamCC.[1] The council organized the third parade, in April 2007, which drew an estimated 14,000 to 15,000 people and 106 entries, and followed it with a second celebration at El Dorado Park.[2] From then until 2019 it produced both the parade and a yearly Chol Chnam Thmey celebration at El Dorado Park.[1]

There was no parade in 2012 or 2013. In 2013 the council's vice president, Raymond Chavarria, told the Long Beach Post that planning had started late and fundraising had fallen behind. That year's park celebration, on April 27, was planned for over 10,000 visitors, with dances, music, a Cambodian food court and a presentation honoring young people who contribute to Cambodian culture in Long Beach.[3] Steve Vibol Meng, a former president of the council, spoke with Voice of America Khmer in 2013 about the community's lack of representation at city level.[4]

In 2019 CamCC stopped hosting the New Year events, citing its budget and competition from celebrations in other Cambodian communities, and asked Cambodia Town, Inc. to take over the parade. It became part of the Cambodia Town Parade and Culture Festival.[1]

Recent filings

The Internal Revenue Service recognized the council as a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization in August 2020. Its return for 2024, filed in May 2025, lists Monorom Neth as president.[5]
