Architecture

The Wat is built in the style of Angkor Wat, with dragon and flower motifs. A square railing surrounds it, topped by four green serpents about 50 meters (164 ft) long, whose tails link at the corners. An outer wall with carved designs encloses the large compound, and inside the temple a large Buddha image sits beneath a Bodhi tree.[1]

History

Khmer Buddhists built the Wat at Lumbini as an offering to Buddhism and as a place for Khmer monks to stay and study. As of 2013 it was the only Khmer Wat in Nepal, and two or three Khmer monks lived at each of the Khmer Wats in India and Nepal.[2]
