Wat

Chùa Cù Là Mới is a Khmer Theravada Buddhist Wat in Châu Thành commune, An Giang province, Vietnam.[1]

History

On June 5, 1974, monks and lay followers of Cù Là Mới, with those of the neighboring Wats of Khlang Ong, Khlang Mương and Cù Là Cũ, marched to the commune office of Minh Hòa to demand the release of monks held under the Saigon government's general mobilization order. Five days later, four monks at the head of a larger protest were killed; they were buried at Chùa Cù Là Cũ, where a memorial stupa now stands.[2]

Religious life

In 2021 the abbot, then Thượng tọa (Venerable) Danh Liêm, head of the Châu Thành district board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, worked with the local authorities to give food to families hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.[3] As of 2026, Hòa thượng (Most Venerable) Danh Liêm was still abbot; on April 7, 2026, provincial leaders brought Khmer New Year (Chol Chnam Thmey) gifts to the Wat, which he received.[1]
