Fancy Cuts

Fancy Cuts is a hair salon in North Long Beach, California, opened in 1994 by Cambodian American owner Davy Tok.[1] Writing in Alta Journal in 2023, Ky-Phong Tran, who grew up in the neighborhood, called it a pillar of the community.[1]

History

Tok came to the United States as a child in the 1980s, after a stay in a refugee camp in Thailand. She opened Fancy Cuts in a storefront in a strip mall in 1994.[1] The shop was remodeled around 2021.[1]

The salon

In 2023 six stylists worked at the salon, and five of them had been there for over 20 years. Customers heard Khmer there along with English, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Prices were low: $10 for a man's cut and $15 for a woman's.[1]

Tok told Tran the salon had served four generations of families. Tran wrote that he had seen customers get their hair done there for weddings, quinceañeras and debutante balls. In late winter and early spring, he wrote, whole families came in to get ready for Chol Chnam Thmey and Tet, the Vietnamese New Year.[1]
