Scholar of Cambodian literature and culture who recorded oral histories and photographs of Cambodian American life in Lowell, Massachusetts.
George Chigas is an American scholar of Cambodian literature and culture and an emeritus associate teaching professor in world languages and cultures at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he also coordinated Asian studies and directed international partnerships for Cambodia. He was associate director of the Cambodian Genocide Program at Yale University from 1998 to 2001, translated the Cambodian verse novel Tum Teav into English, and edited the anthology Cambodia's Lament. He documented Cambodian community life in Lowell through interviews and photography, assembled the George Chigas Collection of images of Cambodian sites and ceremonies, and was a principal investigator on the Southeast Asian Digital Archive.
