Description
Thaly Chhour was displaced from her home village during the fighting that preceded the Khmer Rouge regime and moved with her family to Phnom Penh, where they lived until 1975. She was fourteen when the Khmer Rouge came to power, and her father and brothers died in 1976. Her sisters and mother survived starvation and repeated illness but were no better off in the refugee camps near the Thai-Cambodian border. After reaching Khao I Dang refugee camp the family was sponsored to come to the United States, and she describes adapting to life in Minnesota. (Minnesota Historical Society record)
