History
The Khmer Monument was unveiled in front of Lowell City Hall on 24 September 2017. It was designed by Yary Livan, a Cambodian native and Lowell artist. (Clio)
Significance
The monument aims to immortalize the tragic loss of human lives and humanity during the Cambodian Genocide and to remind the world that crimes against the people of Cambodia will never be forgotten. Its front portrays a mother holding her baby with two children beside her, while the back honors genocide survivors whose resiliency led them to find a new beginning in Lowell through tradition, perseverance, and love.
