Overview
Maketto opened on April 10, 2015 at 1351 H Street NE in Washington, D.C., after several years of development and $1.7 million in fundraising, including proceeds from the first crowdfunded real-estate project in the United States, organized through Fundrise. The three-level, roughly 6,000-square-foot communal marketplace was conceived by chef Erik Bruner-Yang, of Toki Underground fame, together with DURKL founder Will Sharp, and pairs a Taiwanese-Cambodian restaurant with a cafe, bakery, courtyard, and streetwear and sneaker retail. Bruner-Yang, who is Taiwanese American and whose wife is Cambodian American, has described Maketto's menu as reflecting Taiwanese, Cambodian, and broader Asian influences filtered through his American upbringing. Signature dishes include caramel fried chicken, Gruyere dumplings with beef chili, Peking duck, pork shoulder bao platters, gingery soup dumplings, Cambodian noodle soup, sourdough scallion pancake, and a cardamom bun. Maketto has appeared repeatedly on Washingtonian's 100 Very Best Restaurants list, and Bruner-Yang has earned multiple James Beard nominations.
