Description
Bokanika Kan Moyle was born in 1975 in Battambang and remembers very little of the Khmer Rouge period. After the Vietnamese entered Cambodia in 1979 she reached Khao-I-Dang refugee camp in Thailand with her grandmother, mother and three sisters, sponsored by a cousin in Washington, D.C., and the family later moved to San Diego to join an aunt. She studied political science at the University of Denver, earned a master's degree in marketing and works as a marketing director for a health insurance provider, focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion. She recorded her story because future generations should not forget where they come from, and she wants others to understand the effects of poverty and violence on refugee children in the United States. Pacific Asian Counseling Services recorded the interviews from a mental health perspective, the concept was first developed by Cambodia Town, and funding came from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health under the Mental Health Services Act.
