French ethnomusicologist whose Sounds of Angkor project reconstructs Khmer instruments documented in temple reliefs.
Patrick Kersalé is a French ethno-archaeo-musicologist who has carried out field research on music since 1991 and moved to Phnom Penh in 2012. Through the Sounds of Angkor project he studies instruments depicted in Khmer temple reliefs from the seventh to sixteenth centuries and works with Cambodian craftspeople to reconstruct them, including the pin harp, which had fallen out of use. He also developed a research and documentation site on chapei dang veng for UNESCO and Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.
