Preap Sovath (ព្រាប សុវត្ថិ) is a Cambodian pop singer and actor. In 2016 the Cambodia Daily counted him among the country's best-loved crooners.[1] Kampuchea Thmey and AMS Infotainment give his birth date as May 25, 1975, and AMS Infotainment gives his birthplace as S'ang district in Kandal province.[2][3]

Career

Kampuchea Thmey writes that he sang in restaurants from 1994 and began recording for the Rasmey Hang Meas label in 1995, starting with the songs អូនជាបេះដូងបង and ចាំអូនមួយជីវិត.[2] When he left the label in 2020, DAP News reported, he spoke of 23 years together, from 1997.[4] In 1998 and 1999 he recorded duet albums with the singers Him Sivorn and Suos Chantha.[2]

In 2005 the Cambodia Daily described his "strong, bluesy voice" and sentimental lyrics. That year he starred in his first film, Crocodile, a Rasmey Hang Meas production in which his character kills a giant crocodile with a dagger. Several thousand people saw it in its first week in theaters.[5]

Kampuchea Thmey lists among his awards Cambodia Top Singer in 2012 and Best Male Artist of the Year in 2018, and says he has been a judge on Cambodia Idol, X Factor Cambodia and The Voice Kid Cambodia.[2] In October 2016 he and Laura Mam sang at the start of the opening ceremony of the first National Games, at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.[6] In 2019 he spent a month performing across Australia, in concerts sponsored by Save Cambodian Children Fund Australia.[7]

On August 25, 2020, he moved to the Galaxy Navatra label. He said he left his old label with nothing but smiles and excitement, and the label's owner, Leng Navatra, said no fee had been paid to bring him over.[4]

He is among the singers who have covered songs by the writer Kong Bunchhoeun, the Cambodia Daily wrote in 2016, in a line that runs from Sinn Sisamouth to him.[1]

Honors

A royal decree from King Norodom Sihamoni gave him the title Oknha.[2] AMS Infotainment dates the decree April 29, 2022, and calls him the fourth Khmer artist to receive the title.[3]
