Royal University of Phnom Penh
The Royal University of Phnom Penh is a university in Phnom Penh.[1]

History
The university dates its opening as the Royal Khmer University to January 13, 1960, with teaching in French.[2] Prince Norodom Sihanouk founded it during his rule.[1] Under the Khmer Republic, it took the name Phnom Penh University in 1970.[2][1]
For the period from 1965 to 1975, the university's history lists faculties covering pedagogy and commerce, medicine and dentistry, law and economics, pharmacy, science and letters and humanities. It also names the Ecole Normale Supérieure and a Language Institute.[2] The university says it closed from 1975 to 1979 during the Khmer Rouge period.[2]
The university dates the Ecole Normale Supérieure's reopening to 1980, with French again its main teaching language.[2] The 2012 article says the university became the Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1980.[1] The university says the Institute of Foreign Languages opened in 1981, initially preparing students to teach Russian and Vietnamese.[2] It dates the merger of the two institutions into Phnom Penh University to 1988 and the adoption of its present name to 1996.[2] The 2012 article in the International Journal of Learning & Development also gives 1996 for the name Royal University of Phnom Penh.[1]
Faculties
As of October 23, 2026, the university listed five faculties: Education, Engineering, Science, Development Studies and Social Sciences and Humanities.[2]
