Siem Reap province (ខេត្តសៀមរាប) is a province in northwestern Cambodia, on the north side of the Tonle Sap lake. Its seat is the city of Siem Reap.[1][2]
Geography
Into Cambodia gives the province's area as 10,299 square kilometers (3,976 square miles), on the plain of the Tonle Sap. The city of Siem Reap lies 314 kilometers (195 miles) from Phnom Penh by National Road 6.[1] The north of the province is forest and hills, reaching to the plateau of the Dangrek Mountains. The center is a plain of rice fields, villages and temples, and the south is the flood plain of the lake.[1]
As of 2020 the province had two municipalities, Siem Reap and Run Ta Ek Techo Sen, and 11 districts, with 910 villages.[1] One of its districts, Soutr Nikom, holds the lakeside fishing commune of Kampong Khleang.[1][3] Into Cambodia writes that about 70 percent of the people live in the countryside from farming and forest products, about 18 percent by the lake from fishing and seasonal farming, and 12 percent in the towns.[1]
People
The provisional count of the 2019 census found 1,006,512 people in the province, 6.6 percent of the people of Cambodia, up from 896,443 in 2008.[4]
History
Siam took control of Siem Reap, with other northwestern provinces, in 1795. Under the Franco-Siamese treaty of March 23, 1907, it returned to Cambodia, and a royal decree of King Sisowath of December 23, 1907, split the returned territory into the provinces of Battambang and Siem Reap.[1] Thailand took part of the province after the Franco-Thai War of 1941, and it returned to Cambodia in 1946.[1]
