Sisowath Youtevong
Sisowath Youtevong was a Cambodian prince who founded and led the Democratic Party in the 1940s.[1][2] In a 1996 letter, King Norodom Sihanouk recalled him as President of the Council of Ministers, the head of Cambodia's royal government.[2]
Democratic Party
The party pressed for independence without delay, democratic reform and a parliamentary system.[1] Teachers, civil servants and Buddhist monks active in politics were among its supporters.[1] At the Consultative Assembly election of September 1946, the Democrats took 50 of the 67 seats.[1] They went on to write a constitution patterned on the French Fourth Republic's, and the king proclaimed it on May 6, 1947.[1]
