Overview
The Cambodian Family is a grassroots, community-based nonprofit organization founded in February 1980 in Santa Ana, California, by a small group of Cambodian refugees who had fled the Khmer Rouge regime and resettled in the Minnie Street neighborhood of Orange County. In its earliest days, five Cambodian refugees who made up the founding Board of Directors, along with a few other volunteers, pooled their resources, rented a small apartment, and began providing free English classes, adjustment counseling, and emergency translation to their monolingual neighbors.
In 1983, the organization received its first formal grant — $64,000 from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement — to launch Employment Services, and it earned IRS tax-exempt status the same year. Over the following decades the organization expanded to include ESL and vocational training, an after-school Youth Program, early childhood development for school readiness, health access, trauma resolution, and behavioral health services.
While founded to serve Cambodian refugees, The Cambodian Family has broadened its clientele to include immigrants and refugees from Vietnam, Laos, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Ethiopia, Somalia, and beyond. Its mission is to promote social health by providing refugee and immigrant families the opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community.
Today The Cambodian Family operates from its offices at 1626 E 4th Street in Santa Ana under the leadership of Executive Director Vattana Peong, MPH. As a mid-size 501(c)(3) organization it reports approximately $2.3 million in annual revenue and continues to deliver health, mental health, youth, family, immigration, translation, and workforce services to a diverse refugee and immigrant community in Orange County.
