Wat Bakan
វត្តបាកាន
Wat Bakan (វត្តបាកាន) is a Buddhist Wat in Ou Rumchek village, Trapeang Chong commune, Bakan district, Pursat province, Cambodia.[1]
History
The Buddha image of Wat Bakan faces west, and the Wat holds its New Year bathing of the Buddha (srang preah) later than other Wats.[1] The Wat and the nearby river are linked to the story of how Pursat province got its name. The abbot and the Wat's achar (lay ritual leaders) built an island of nearly 4 ha (10 acres) from soil dredged out of the old Pursat river beside the Wat. On April 25, 2025, work began to make it a park called "Bakan Park, Island of Enlightenment".[2]
Religious life
As of 2026, the abbot was Preah Kru Lay Kan.[3] On April 21, 2025, he led the Wat's bathing of the Buddha for the Khmer New Year with the Wat's achar committee and lay followers; tens of thousands of people attended.[1] The Wat's grounds host "Sangkran Wat Bakan", the district's New Year festival[4], which drew about 30,000 people on April 5, 2026.[5] On May 5, 2026, the abbot gave US$2,000 from the offerings of lay followers toward a new emergency building at the provincial referral hospital.[3]
