Wat

Wat Damrey Sar (វត្តដំរីស, "Wat of the White Elephant") is a Buddhist Wat in the center of Battambang city, Cambodia.[1]

History

Its formal name is វត្តស្វេតឆ័ត្រគុព្ជាជ័យ. The Wat was founded in 1793, when a forest-dwelling monk who taught meditation settled on land where the provincial governors had once kept war elephants. The place became a meditation retreat, and then the present Wat. The grounds measure 266 by 130 m (873 by 427 ft), 34,580 m² (8.5 acres), between the provincial museum to the east and the city hall to the north. The walls and window frames of its old vihara (assembly hall) carry carved reliefs, among them battle scenes from the Reamker, the Khmer Ramayana, which draw visitors from Cambodia and abroad.[1]

Religious life

Before dawn on February 24, 2026, thieves broke into the Wat's dining hall and took the money from seven offering boxes. The goods taken from the dining halls of Wat Damrey Sar and Wat Sangker were returned to the monks.[2][3]
