Wat

Wat Ketanak Khmer Kampuchea Krom, also spelled Wat Ketanek, is a Khmer Krom Buddhist Wat on Wynyard Avenue in Rossmore, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[1][2]

History

Khmer Krom families, who came to Australia in the 1980s and 1990s from a Khmer region of southern Vietnam, bought the site in 1998 and founded the Wat that year. In 1999 the community brought a golden Buddha image of about 3 tonnes (3.3 short tons), cast in Bangkok, to the Wat.[2]

When the Wat was first proposed, some neighbors feared noise. By 2010 local residents visited and joined its activities.[2]

Religious life

The Wat follows the Theravada tradition.[1] As of 2010, the golden Buddha image sat under a pagoda shelter, the grounds held a prayer hall and monks lived in a nearby cottage. The community planned a new hall with a traditional Khmer roof and ornament. The Wat stands among gum trees beside a creek crossed by a footbridge and serves as both a place of retreat and a community meeting place. Theravada Buddhists from Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand, Burma and India also came to the Wat.[2]
