Wat
Wat Khemarak Ratanaram
Wat Khemarak Ratanaram, also known as Wat Khmer Brisbane, is a Khmer Buddhist Wat in Marsden, Logan City, south of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.[1][2]
History
The Wat was founded in 1990 and is one of the oldest Theravada Buddhist temples in Queensland. In 1991 the Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia, Tep Vong, traveled to Queensland to preside over the start of building work on its ordination hall, which is built in the classic Cambodian style.[1]
Community
As of 2024, the Wat served a Cambodian-born community of about 2,700 people in South East Queensland, as well as Cambodian Australians born locally. It was also a cultural center for the Cambodian community of Brisbane, home to the Wat Khemarak Ratanaram Dance Group, which teaches Cambodian classical dance. The Wat had close ties with Logan City Council, and Wat Thai Buddharam, which had no ordination hall of its own, used its hall to ordain monks.[1]
