Wat Khmer Puthearam
វត្តខ្មែរពុទ្ធារាម
Wat Khmer Puthearam (វត្តខ្មែរពុទ្ធារាម) is a Khmer Buddhist Wat on O'Connell Street in Manurewa, South Auckland, New Zealand.[1][2] It is run by Khmer Incorporated.[1]
History
Members of Auckland's Khmer community founded the Wat in about 2014 in two former state houses. By 2016 the garage had become its main hall.[3] Khmer Incorporated, which lists Wat Khmer Puthearam as its other name, became a registered charity on February 4, 2014.[1]
In April 2016 the Wat held a three-day Khmer New Year celebration. Women of the community cooked Khmer dishes from food donated by members, much of it grown in their own gardens, and a young monk lived at the Wat.[3]
Religious life
Khmer Incorporated carries out religious, cultural, educational and social welfare work. It promotes the practice and study of Theravada Buddhism and the teaching of the Khmer language and culture.[1] In 2020 the Wat held its Kathina robe offering on October 23 and 24 and used the occasion to raise funds for community expenses during the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] The Wat held its Pchum Ben celebration in October 2026.[5]
Visiting
As of 2020 the Wat was open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a lunch service from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.[4]
