Wat

Wat Sereychum is a Khmer Krom Buddhist Wat on Filbert Court in Cranbourne North, southeast of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[1][2]

History

The Vipassana Buddhist Meditation Association of Wat Sereychum Australia was founded in October 2015 to run Khmer language and Buddhist courses, teach meditation and care for people in need.[2] It has been a registered charity since October 17, 2015.[3]

Religious life

The Wat follows the Theravada tradition of the Kampuchea Krom community, and its abbot has been Venerable Rakkhitakosalo Kim Minh Lam, who teaches meditation and Cambodian culture and speaks Khmer, Vietnamese, Thai and English.[1]

The prayer hall enshrines a marble Buddha image made in Varanasi, India, in the earth-witness posture and modeled on the image in the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya. The meditation hall holds bronze Buddha images from Cambodia, Burma and Thailand. In 2023 the Wat celebrated Khmer New Year in April and the start of the rains retreat (Bon Chol Vassa) in July. As of 2023, its monks performed blessings for babies, weddings and new homes, and funeral services.[2]
