Wat
Wat Udomsamagum
Wat Udomsamagum is a Khmer Buddhist Wat on Wyllie Road in Papatoetoe, Auckland, New Zealand.[1][2] It was founded by the Cambodian Association (Auckland), with which it remains affiliated.[3][1]
History
In 2000 the Cambodian Association (Auckland) began raising money for a head office and a community hall for Cambodians in Auckland. In June 2001 it bought a property at 105 Wyllie Road for $270,000. The association then chose to set up a second Khmer Wat in Auckland instead of the hall. It turned the existing buildings into an office, a classroom and a residence for monks, began building a small vihara (shrine hall) and sponsored two monks.[3]
The change divided the community. The head monk in Wellington had not agreed to a new Wat, and some members who had given to the hall campaign stopped their support and joined Wat Khemaraphiratanaram.[3] The new Wat took the name Wat Oudom Samagom Khmer ("the Temple of the Great Khmer Association").[3]
Religious life
The Wat follows the Cambodian Theravada tradition. Its teachers have included the Venerable Thach Seang, and the Venerable Var Samet has served as its spiritual director.[1]
Community
As of 2008 the Cambodian Association (Auckland) ran a Khmer radio program, Khmer language classes for children, an English class for adults and a Khmer classical dance troupe, and arranged weddings.[3] The association has been a registered charity since August 28, 2014. Its purposes include advancing and teaching the tenets, observance and culture of Buddhism.[4]
