Guide

When to visit Cambodia depends on its two seasons: the rainy season, which the UK government gives as June to October, and the dry season.[1] Cambodia's Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issues the country's weather notices.[2]

The dry season

Cold spells can come in the dry season, brought by the northeast monsoon. In January 2023 the ministry warned of chilly weather from January 25 to 31.[2] It gave lows of 18 °C (64 °F) to 22 °C (72 °F) and highs of 28 °C (82 °F) to 33 °C (91 °F) for the central lowlands. In the highlands and four northern and northeastern provinces, mornings could drop to 15 °C (59 °F).[2]

The hottest weeks come before the rains. In April 2023 the ministry warned of heat of up to 40 °C (104 °F) in the central lowlands and highlands, and of highs of 35 °C (95 °F) on the coast.[3]

The rainy season

The UK government describes heavy monsoon storms from June to October that damage roads, landslides that can cut off travel to some provinces, and flooded streets in Phnom Penh, including on the way to the airport.[1] Lakes, caves and waterfalls can flood suddenly in these months.[1]

Rivers and the lake

Rivers and lakes run high from June to October, with faster currents. In the dry months from March to May, boat travel on the rivers becomes harder as sandbars are exposed.[1]

Checking the weather

The UK government advises following local news and weather reports and the forecasts of the World Meteorological Organization.[1] The Mekong River Commission posts official updates on the Mekong.[1]
