History
Banteay Chhmar was created by Jayavarman VII during the Angkor period and flourished between the 12th and 13th centuries C.E. Archaeologists have interpreted the site as a possible city or periodically inhabited garrison-temple with religious, political or military functions. (Wikipedia)
Significance
Banteay Chhmar follows the Bayon style associated with Jayavarman VII and incorporates Buddhist and tantric imagery, including multiarmed Heruka dancing deities and Lokeśvara. Its temples, reliefs and hydraulic system provide evidence of Angkorian religious ideas, political power, military systems, transport and water management. (Wikipedia)
Stewardship
The archaeological complex is recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. The Global Heritage Fund, Heritage Watch and the Provincial Government have supported local community-based tourism, education, training and site preservation. (Wikipedia)
