American linguist of Southeast Asian languages who wrote the standard Yale series of Cambodian language textbooks and readers.
Franklin E. Huffman is an American linguist and diplomat who was a professor of Southeast Asian languages at Cornell University, holding a full professorship there from 1972 to 1985, and who also taught at Yale University. He wrote the Yale Language Series Cambodian course materials, including Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader (1970), Spoken Cambodian and Intermediate Cambodian Reader, and published research on Khmer loanwords in Thai and on Mon-Khmer languages including Chong from 1967 onward. From 1985 he worked for the United States Department of State, serving as press attache in Rangoon and Phnom Penh and directing United States cultural and information offices in Marrakech and Paris.
