Overview

Room to Read Cambodia is the country program of the global nonprofit Room to Read, and has operated in Cambodia since 2002 as one of the national government's primary partners in improving quality of education. It works in two flagship program areas: the Literacy Program, which trains teachers and produces Khmer-language children's books to build early primary reading skills, and the Girls' Education Program, which supports adolescent girls to complete secondary school through mentoring, life-skills classes, and material support.

Since 2002, Room to Read's Girls' Education Program in Cambodia has benefitted more than 17,000 girls, and in 2022 the program was named a laureate of the UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education, receiving a US$50,000 award funded by the Government of the People's Republic of China. Rather than distributing an open-application cash scholarship, Room to Read enrolls students through partner schools and provides comprehensive, multi-year support (school materials, tutoring, mentoring, and financial help as needed). The Cambodia program is led by Country Director Vantha Chea, with Nead Bunna serving as Senior Girls' Education Program Manager.
