Description

Venus on Earth is Dengue Fever’s third release and contains 12 original songs. Its recorded music blends 1960s Cambodian pop with surf rock, film-noir soundtrack sounds, psychedelic riffs, jazzy accents, Bollywood influences, folk elements, and American and international styles. Chhom Nimol sings in Khmer and English, including songs performed in a duo with Zac Holtzman. (Realworldrecords; Npr)

Credits

The album is performed by the Los Angeles sextet Dengue Fever and is fronted by Cambodian singer Chhom Nimol. The group formed after Zac and Ethan Holtzman became interested in 1960s Cambodian pop and recruited Nimol from Los Angeles’s Cambodian community. (Realworldrecords; Npr)

Context

Released on 08 June 2008, Venus on Earth was the group’s first album of all-original compositions. Dengue Fever’s first two albums had included covers of songs associated with Sinn Sisamouth, while this release developed the group’s own compositions in the style of Cambodian pop and related genres.
