Wat Angkor Khang Cheung
វត្តអង្គរខាងជើង
Wat Angkor Khang Cheung (វត្តអង្គរខាងជើង, North Angkor Pagoda) is a Buddhist Wat within the enclosure of Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap, Cambodia.[1][2] The enclosure also holds a second Wat, Wat Angkor Khang Tbong (South Angkor Pagoda).[1]
History
The Wat's tradition dates its founding to 1432, when King Ponhea Yat moved the capital from Angkor to Phnom Penh and the monks who did not follow him settled at Angkor Wat. It flourished in the 16th century under King Ang Chan. The Buddha images Preah Ang Chek and Preah Ang Chorm were first kept here.[2] Its formal name is វត្តឥន្ទបត្តបុរីអង្គរខាងជើង.[1]
The APSARA National Authority, which manages the Angkor area, has repaired the Wat's old buildings while keeping their original form.[3] It is one of five Wats in the first stage of a 2026 master plan for the Wats of the Angkor Archaeological Park, and a model for the others. APSARA paid for two kuti (monks' residences), a kitchen, a bathroom for monks and two public bathrooms.[4][5]
Religious life
On August 8, 2026, the Council of Monks on Angkor Pagoda Affairs held the first public presentation of the master plans at the Wat. Samdech Preah Putcheymony Khim Son, the Third Deputy Supreme Patriarch, presided, with Samdech Preah Brahma Rattanamony Pin Sem and the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts. The new buildings let monks live and practice at the Wat, which is planned as a place where Buddhists and visitors can learn about Buddhism and meditate.[4][5][6]
