Wat Angkor Khang Tbong
វត្តអង្គរខាងត្បូង
Wat Angkor Khang Tbong (វត្តអង្គរខាងត្បូង, South Angkor Pagoda) is a Buddhist Wat within the enclosure of Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap, Cambodia.[1][2]
History
The Wat stands in Kravan village, Nokor Thom commune, beside Angkor Wat and about 6 km (3.7 mi) from the center of Siem Reap.[2] It is one of two Wats inside the Angkor Wat enclosure, with Wat Angkor Khang Cheung, and one of the 35 Wats inside the protected zones of the Angkor area, under the APSARA National Authority. Its formal name is វត្តឥន្ទបត្តបុរីអង្គរតូចខាងត្បូង.[1] In 2026 it was one of five Wats in the first stage of a master plan for the Wats of the Angkor Archaeological Park.[3]
Religious life
On the evening of September 7, 2025, the first day of kan ben (កាន់បិណ្ឌ), the days of offerings to monks that lead up to Pchum Ben, Senator Khuon Khunthy, her family and the Wat's lay followers brought food and offerings to the monks of the Wat.[4] On October 11, 2025, she and donors led a Kathina robe procession to the Wat. The abbot set aside part of the offerings for the monks' meals and most of the rest for repairs to the vihara (ordination hall), the kuti (monks' residences) and the dining hall, and for the grounds.[5]
On April 15, 2025, during Cambodian New Year, the provincial governor, officials and lay followers joined a valuk chetey (វាលុកចេតិយ) ceremony at the Wat, in which sand is heaped into small stupas to represent the stupa that holds the Buddha's hair and tooth.[6]
In 2026 the Wat hosted an ordination program for Visak Bochea, in which young men were ordained as novices and others kept the lay precepts. On the evening of May 2, 2026, Chhuor Sopanha, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Cults and Religion, paid respects to the abbot and spoke with the novices and lay precept-keepers who were keeping the training at the Wat.[7]
