Description
The album consists mostly of covers of Cambodian rock and pop songs from the 1960s and 1970s, with two original songs made in the same style. Chhom Nimol sings all of the lyrics in Khmer, while the band combines this Cambodian source material with psychedelic, lounge, surf, and garage-pop influences. (Wikipedia; Dengue Fever)
Credits
The recording features Cambodian-born vocalist Chhom Nimol with the Los Angeles-based members of Dengue Fever. The band recruited Nimol through auditions in Long Beach’s Little Phnom Penh area so she could sing the Cambodian songs in Khmer. (Wikipedia; Dengue Fever)
Context
Dengue Fever formed in Los Angeles in 2001 after Ethan and Zac Holtzman discovered Cambodian psychedelic rock music. The self-titled debut was released in 2003 and drew on songs by Cambodian artists including Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, and Pen Ran, many of whom died or disappeared during the Khmer Rouge regime.
