Rithy Panh is a Cambodian director, producer and author whose documentaries and features address the Khmer Rouge period and its aftermath.
Rithy Panh is a Cambodian film director, screenwriter, producer and author who has been making films since his first documentary, Site 2, in 1989 (Wikipedia; Festival de Cannes). Much of his work documents the Khmer Rouge genocide and its aftermath, from the fiction feature Rice People, which competed at Cannes in 1994, to S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine and The Missing Picture, which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2013 and became the first Cambodian film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Wikipedia; Festival de Cannes). He returned to Cambodia in 1990 while keeping Paris as a base and founded the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center in Phnom Penh (Wikipedia). He also teaches and mentors younger filmmakers, including at the Doha Film Institute documentary lab (Screen Daily).
